How Does The ReShape Dual Balloon Work?

Michelle-Gastric-Balloon-Before-After-Results-darkIf you are planning to get the ReShape procedure and you are not sure of how it really works, then don’t worry at all as we are here to explain every detail of the procedure to you. As you already must know, the gastric balloon is made of a soft, pliable silicone elastomer material that can be deflated and inflated to various capacities. The surgery itself is non-invasive and is done by endoscopy. Endoscope involves the insertion of an endoscope through your mouth to your body cavity. An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube that has a light and a camera at the end of it. The light and the camera are present as to help the endoscope navigate itself better in the body.

Inserting Your Balloon

  • Firstly, we use the endoscope to detect any abnormalities that might be present in your digestive tract. Once clear, the endoscope will take the deflated balloon from your mouth, through your esophagus (food pipe), all the way down to your stomach. You needn’t worry about swallowing, as a numbing spray is used to numb the throat area in addition to taking muscle relaxants. Once the balloon is safely inside the stomach, another tube known as a catheter is used to fill it with sterile saline, expanding it to the desired size. Usually, the desired size is about as big as a grapefruit. Once the filling has happened, the surgeon gently tugs at the catheter and removes it. The balloon itself has a self-sealing valve and by this time, closes itself thereby, floating freely in your stomach. By this method, we place two balloons as per the requirements of the ReShape Dual Balloon technology. The procedure itself is painless and only mildly discomforting. Since it is non-invasive, it usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete and because there are no incisions, the patient can be expected to go home on the same day.  Immediately after the surgery, some discomfort is expected like nausea, etc. but this does not last. The balloon will be in place for about six months during which you will also be adhering to a strict weight loss program.

Now we come to the second stage of how the balloon works. The other side of this is that your weight loss manager will prescribe you to a strict diet and hopefully, some healthy lifestyle changes. The balloon alone is a tool to help with your weight loss goals. We will be monitoring you to give you training advice, monitor your exercise and diet, keep you motivated and help you meet your long term weight loss goals. How this works is that your BMI is significantly reduced in these six months. Even after the balloon is removed, your exercise and dietary monitoring is done for an additional six months.
